They say things like malpractice insurance make being a doctor less awesome than it used to be. But every now and then, you still get to be a BADASS.
On Monday night, a 71-year-old woman in Bakersfield, California named Pauline Larwood was out at dinner with friends when she started choking. So someone gave her the Heimlich, but it didn't work, and she passed out.
Luckily, there happened to be a medical conference going on in town, and the restaurant was FILLED with some of the best doctors in the country. One of them was Dr. Royce Johnson, who knew exactly what to do.
First, he calmly told everyone that he needed a KNIFE, so someone handed him their pocketknife. Then he called for a pen . . . and performed an emergency tracheotomy on her, using part of the pen as a breathing tube.
Meanwhile, another doctor was checking her pulse, and someone else was calling 911. But before the ambulance even got there, Pauline was sitting up and TALKING. She ended up staying in the hospital overnight. But according to her son, she's doing fine.
