Yesterday, Apple announced its top iPhone and iPad apps of 2012.  Last year the top app was Instagram, which was basically a no-brainer.  This year is more of a surprise.

--The top iPhone app of the year according to Apple is . . . Action Movie FX.

--If you've never heard of it . . . and we hadn't . . . it actually does seem like a cool app.  It lets you add CRAZY and incredibly decent-looking special effects to your videos, including EXPLOSIONS, UFO attacks, or natural disasters.

--The app is free and comes with some basic effects, but add-ons like new effects cost 99 cents each.  It was created by J.J. ABRAMS' company, Bad Robot.

--The top iPad app of the year is a more traditional pick.  It's called Paper and it's a really cool sketchbook app.  It's also free, but costs money for add-ons.
