In 1962, James Meredith became the first African-American student to enroll at the University of Mississippi.
--President Kennedy sent the National Guard and 500 U.S. marshals to get James to class safely, and there were riots on campus that injured hundreds of people.
--Well . . . Ole Miss had their homecoming last week, and a 21-year-old student named Courtney Pearson was crowned homecoming queen.
--Fifty years after James made it possible for Courtney to attend Ole Miss, she became the first African-American student in school history to win homecoming queen.
--A few days before she was crowned queen, Courtney got the chance to meet James . . . and he told her he was proud of her.
