Legendary San Antonio radio personalityRichard “Güero Polkas” Davila, known as the “Wolfman Jack of Tejano Radio,” is hospitalized after suffering a stroke on Friday afternoon (Aug 20).
Davila’s brother,Albert Peña Davila,shared the news withTejano Nation. “My brother had a stroke on Friday around 4 p.m.,” he said via email. “Family is asking for prayers.”
The 75-year-old former disc jockey and songwriter was admitted into a San Antonio hospital for recovery and is in stable condition. His wife shared an update on Saturday. “Rick is doing OK, they haven’t finished with his testing,” she said. “The doctor said it was a good thing that I took him in because something was going on with his brain. They haven’t finished with their testing and they’re going to call me to talk to me about it. I’ll let you know what happens.”
The latest information shared from his brother on Monday (Aug. 23) is Güero Polkas tested positive for COVID-19 and remains hospitalized.

Güero Polkas spent 44 years on the air at legendary radio station KEDA Radio Jalapeño in San Antonio, a station his father,Manuel Davila Sr., launched in 1966. Güero Polkas began his radio career as a teenager with his brother Manuel at KUKA, a Spanish-language station that played American rock ‘n’ roll in the late 1950s, showcasing local talent on the air and at “Teen’s Choice” concerts in San Antonio. Güero Polkas aired his last show on KEDA in 2011 after the radio station was sold by the Davila family to a new company.
